5Church

For these doors I actually reached out to the current owners to get a better feel for what their history was.

I found out that they’re owned by 5Church. It’s a restaurant. Restaurant in a church! How cool is that? Well, they serve “New American cuisine in a casual yet refined atmosphere” as I learned form Alessandria, Director of Marketing at 5Church Group. She went onto explain that “Cutting-edge design, world-class food and stellar service are all part of the 5Church experience.” It’s definitely apparent form location to location too. They have several different locations including Charleston, SC; Charlotte, NC; and Atlanta, GA.

The 5Church first opened in May 2012 in Charlotte, NC. Then in November 2015, they opened their Charleston, SC location.

Their menu is very local and seasonal, and our chefs and mixologist will create 5-7 new “Daily Features” that change every day. These include a cocktail, different farmers and artisans we use on our charcuterie board, seafood, oysters, main courses, and desserts. Guests chance choose to order these individually, or experience it as a 6-course tasting. Here’s a link to a sample dinner menu (since it changes daily), and they typically post a dish from the daily features on our Instagram (@5ChurchCharleston) every day at 5PM.

They also book private parties such as holiday events, weddings, and other social events in the restaurant (more info here).

Building History

“This 100-year old church was originally the Church of the Redeemer” Alessandria explains. “We believe it was non-denominational as it was used by the Charleston Port Society as a “Mariners’ Church” that provided support services and lodging for any sailors that came into Charleston. Land was bequeathed in 1866, the church was erected in 1916 and desanctified in the 1950s.”

The land was originally controlled by the Charleston Seafarer’s Organization and gives so more information http://www.charlestonseafarers.org/mission-history/

Since the 1950s the building as housed various things. Before 5Church, there was another restaurant housed in the space.
